Where the city ends and the forest begins
You know what’s funny about Barcelona? You can’t really understand it until you see it from above. Seriously, go up a little, and suddenly the city makes sense. That’s Collserola for you: this huge stretch of green wrapping around the back of Barcelona, more than 8,000 hectares of forest, hills, and old farmhouses. It’s basically the city’s lungs.
Centuries ago, it was all monasteries, farmland, and little masías, those traditional Catalan country houses you still bump into up there. Now it’s where locals escape to walk, cycle, or just… do nothing. You know that thing called silence? They’ve got plenty of it here.
A short trip to breathe again
And the best part? It’s ridiculously close. You’ll hop on a train at Plaça Catalunya, and twenty, thirty minutes later, you’re in the woods. It’s not magic, it’s the FGC lines. Take the S1 or S2 and get off at Baixador de Vallvidrera, that’s your gateway in.
Or, if you’re more into the scenic route, take the metro up to Av. Tibidabo and then the funicular.
Cyclists love it too. There are marked bike routes from different neighborhoods. And if you’re feeling sporty, you can even walk up from Sarrià or Sant Gervasi. Yes, directly from the city. Pro tip: go up by train, come down on foot. That descent through the forest? Unreal.
The summit and the skyline
Now, at the very top, you’ll find Tibidabo. You can’t miss it, big church, Sagrat Cor, with that amusement park that looks straight out of another era. It’s the oldest one in Spain, by the way. The view from up there? Honestly, it’s like the city shrinks for you. The sea on one side, the mountains on the other, and Barcelona spread out like a model city.
A little further along, there’s the Torre de Collserola. You’ll recognize it, that tall, futuristic needle designed by Norman Foster for the 1992 Olympics. There’s an observation deck up there at 560 meters. If you’re afraid of heights, maybe don’t look stra
ight down.
The path where the city breathes
But let me tell you, the real magic of Collserola isn’t in the big monuments, it’s in the paths. The Carretera de les Aigües is the star of the show. Locals love it. It’s wide, almost flat, perfect for running, biking, or just strolling while pretending you’re thinking deep thoughts. On one side you’ve got forest, on the other, the whole of Barcelona beneath you.
If you go in the evening, the sunset paints everything orange and purple. The sea, the rooftops, the hills. Bring your camera… or just don’t. Just look at it. Sit on one of those benches and let it all sink in.
Farmhouses, scents, and life among trees
And between the trails, you’ll come across these old masías like Can Borrell, where you can eat proper Catalan food after your hike. Or Can Catà and Can Coll, which are now little environmental centers. Great for families. You might even spot a squirrel or, if you’re lucky, a hawk hovering above the pines. And yes, sometimes wild boars too but don’t panic, they’re just curious.
Walking without haste, looking without maps
There’s no “right” way to do Collserola. You’ve got short and easy ones like Baixador de Vallvidrera to Tibidabo which is perfect for a couple of hours. Then there’s the Sant Cugat to Barcelona route if you’re up for a longer walk or ride, with killer views the whole way. And, of course, the legendary Camí de les Aigües it’s basically the city’s Sunday ritual. Runners, cyclists, families, dogs… everyone’s up there.
Notes from those who’ve already climbed
If you’re going, just keep a few things in mind. Bring water, sunscreen, and good shoes. The sun hits harder than you’d think, even in spring. Oh, and check the weather! The whole mood changes from season to season. Early mornings are best, especially on weekends, because locals love this place and it fills up fast.
The closest escape you’ll ever find
The thing about Collserola is… it’s not really an excursion. It’s more like a reset button. You go up, you breathe, you slow down. The city doesn’t feel so heavy after that. Up here, the air smells like pine, the light shifts slower, and you realize how rare it is to be somewhere where the beach and the mountains are just a train ride apart.
